Congo Camp 2010

Today was Zippy's 5th birthday and Congo Camp threw him a special birthday bash. Zippy made rounds on campus, popped in and out of classes, and was greeted with hugs everywhere he went. While at lunch, all the campers sung Happy Birthday to Zippy which made his birthday extra special. As a treat for all of his favorite campers, Zippy bought everyone tasty frozen ices. The birthday celebration will continue with Zippy opening all his birthday cards and continuing to see all his favorite campers.

The campers got to use their imaginations to make beautiful sculptures. But they only got to use pipe-cleaners! The campers twisted and stretched the pipe-cleaners into all kinds of different shapes. Some campers sculpted themselves walking their dog while others made lots of pretty flowers.

The green science campers started their day off by painting some flower pots. As they were painting their pots the green science counselors taught the campers how to grown flowers, fruits and vegetables in their pot. Some of the campers decorated their pots with recycling logos while other chose to paint their favorite camp mascot, Zippy!

Today, the campers started practicing for the famous Congo Camp Lip-Sync. They picked out their songs and started coordinating their dance moves. Some groups chose classic pop songs while other groups chose an electric-country mix. But, you will have to wait until Friday to see all the songs the campers chose.

This summer Congo Camp decided to go green and started a recycling competition. Since the beginning of session 2 the campers have been saving plastic cups, bags and other recyclable items. So far there have been a total of 2335 items collected by all the groups. The three groups which have collected the most items are:

1. The Zany Zucchini - 368 items
2. The Buzzin Bumble-Bees - 242 items
3. Rockin Robins - 228 items

The recycling race is a great way for the campers to get excited about recycling and also keeps Congo Camp beautiful. At the end of the week the group with the most items will win a super awesome prize, so remember kids, Keep On Recycling!

Have A Great 4th of July Weekend, from Congo Camp!

The outdoor education counselors had a special treat for the campers today, S'mores! First the campers got to toast their own marshmallows, some like their mallows lightly brown while others preferred their mallows burnt. The outdoor education counselors then helped the campers put together the rest of their tasty treat. After eating a s'more one camper exclaimed, "Outdoor Ed is the best!"

The culinary adventure campers ended their week on a sweet note by to making hand squeezed lemonade. The campers squeezed 18 lemons to get three cups of pure lemon juice. Then they added water and sugar to make a perfect summer-time lemonade. As you can see from the picture, it was a very messy job.

The Archery Competition began yesterday, with all the freshman, sophomore and senior campers competing. Today the final round of the competition continued. Each group separated into three teams and switched out archers every round. Most of the teams had around 40 points but some teams had earned more than 100 points. The team with the most points at the end of the two day competition will be awarded prizes by the archery counselors.

The pool is one of the most popular places on campus. All the campers look forward to cooling of on a hot summer day in the refreshing pool. The campers make sure that their counselors get them there on time so they don't miss any of their pool time. From 9am to 3pm the Congo Camp pool is always filled with smiling campers.

In arts and crafts the campers got to make beaded bracelets, key-chains and necklaces for a friend or themselves. Some campers made a bracelet for a friend in their group while others made necklaces to wear themselves. "I'm making this bracelet for my mommy," said a camper, as she put together a friendship bracelet in the arts and crafts class.
