Extra, Extra: Congo Camp Invaded!

UFOs have invaded the Congo Camp today. The How Things Work campers created electric flying saucers today to set off outside.

These saucers utilized all of the information about which the campers have been learning. Starting with batteries, the campers connected the wires correctly to get the saucer to wind up.

Once the campers had sent enough electricity into the motor, the saucers flew into the air and it became a storm of UFOs.

Our How Things Work campers definitely learned a lot this week while having loads of fun. We are glad to see these campers getting to put all of their knowledge to use on this last day and we know they will always be able to use this interesting information!

Aces with Airplanes

Yesterday, we had mentioned that the How Things Work campers had started to learn how airplanes work. The really fun aspect of this was beginning to build model airplanes.

Well, as the campers have continued to learn about airplanes, they also finished the airplanes they were working on. Before these flyers take flight, the campers wanted to ensure that the airplanes were representative of their own personalities.

Another exciting construction these campers worked on today were "Solar Powered Ovens". These ovens were not merely constructed but were actually put to good use by baking cookies.

The cookies will be a well-earned reward after the campers have worked hard on learning and constructing of the solar powered oven.

From Wired to Wings

In How Things Work, the campers started off their day by learning more about electricity. During this time, they used some wires and batteries to see how things work.

After working with electricity, they moved on to studying airplanes. To understand how airplanes work, the campers built wooden airplane models.

To use these models, the counselors are hoping that they are able to blast them off with some air pressure and a bottle. We are hoping they are able to show the first flight of their wooden airplanes before the week is up!

When Life Gives You Lemons. . .

Make batteries, of course! In How Things Work, the campers were exploring the various ways of how electricity works so they started off with lemons.

So, how, you ask, do you get Lemons to cause electricity? Well, these young campers first
started off with fresh lemons, some copper wire, and two nails.

After some intelligent wiring, the campers pushed some nails into the lemon. And, voila, you have a battery!

The campers were allowed to feel the faint electric flow that was caused by the wires and nails in the lemon. After everyone had their lemon working as a battery, they lit LED lights.

The campers, in How Things Work, have been enjoying their first day back getting to explore the electrical properties of fruit!

What's in a Bubble?

To finish off the day, the How Things Work campers blew bubbles in the toilet bowl (no, not the bathroom but an area near the fields).

They had great fun making various shapes out of bubbles and getting to understand how exactly bubbles are made. Here are a couple of pics from the fun they had at the end of the day:

Figuring out how to Fix the Spill

As the world tries to figure out how to fix the oil spill, our own How Things Work campers tried to figure out how to fix their own oil spill.

On trays with faux beaches, the campers had oil added to their water and had to figure out what was the most effective way to stop the oil from spreading.

Starting out with buoys and moving onto other spill preventers, these campers tested various ways to stop the oil from spreading.

We haven't heard back on the best technique, but as soon as we do we'll let you know!

Working through How It Works

In How Things Work, campers begun their first week and ended their first day by creating a vacuum.

With only two cardboard rolls, some tape, and a straw, the camp constructors in How Things Work figured out how those useful household appliances keep our homes clean.

Today, these campers also had the chance to work with glow sticks and figure out why they light up in the dark. Over the next few days, the counselors have many activities planned for these campers and we look forward to seeing some of the other exciting things they construct and deconstruct!
