Congo Camp 2010

Our Global Arts campers made a trip today to Puerto Rico.  As they ventured to this destination, they learned about the music that hails from this isle.

The main instrument about which they learned was the Puerto Rican Guitar.  They had precut guitars on which they put various decorations and patterns to make it their own.

Sitting in this Global Arts room, one can tell just how much the campers are enjoying their travels around the world.  They have definitely learned a lot this session and we hope they have fun continuing over the last days of session!

When we think of colonial times, we remember how our forefathers and foremothers lacked home electricity.  So, of course, the campers had to make candles.

The campers had fun making these candles from pieces of honeycomb-style wax.  Our campers' candles were excellent and they will definitely keep our campers' houses well-lit if the lights ever go out. 

As the session continues, these campers will get to enjoy a wonderful overnight trip to Colonial Williamsburg.  We hope they have fun as they make their way down there tomorrow!

The Ropes Adventure Campers were climbing the wall this morning.  After a summer of day camp, many of these adventurers have honed there skills and can make it up the wall with ease.

Many of the campers are able to rock the difficult side of the wall without having to worry themselves when they get to the ledges. 

They will continue practicing on all of the obstacles over the course of the week and we look forward to seeing them as they fly down the zip line!

This session, one of our camps will be taking our Congo Campers back to George Washington's time.  The Colonial Kids will be learning about Colonial times during the beginning of the week and then will take a trek to Williamsburg to enhance their knowledge!

Our Colonial Kids started off this session by making Medicine Pouches.  These pouches were hand stitched to completion. 

The campers started the pouches by threading the leather strings through the holes to connect the pouches; once these were connected, the pouches came together quickly.

These campers are already excited to take their trip, but we know that they are ready to learn as much as possible before heading off on Wednesday!

As the rain continues to pour (and, the old man continues to snore), the Congo Camp is preparing for various indoor activities to complete.


Every day camp area has a room to which they are assigned and within these rooms they have many fun games for the campers.

Our Cracker Barrel counselors have already acquired playing cards to play some card games, while the equine counselors have information they will be helping the students learn about horses.

While we hope that the rain clears, we know that the day campers will be having fun at their activities today!

During the last week of day camp, our Congo Camp Staff has many events planned for these day campers this week.

On Wednesday, we will be having a Wet and Wild day. For Wet and Wild day, many of our normal activities such as Equine and Ropes will continue, but there will also water-based activities around Congo Camp. 

Thursday our day campers will get to see the staff/camper basketball game.  We can't wait to see everyone cheering on their side.

And, to finish off a wonderful summer of day camp, the Carnival will be on Friday.

So, welcome, campers & family, to another exciting two weeks here at Congo Camp!

A few of the masks that our Time Traveling Campers created!

Our Time Travelers started off their day by decorating masks for the acting they are doing this afternoon. 

Over the course of this session, these time traveling campers will be learning all about the various items that have been made throughout history.

They will be studying hieroglyphs, making pyramids, and even creating sun-dried bricks.  Earlier this week, they made passports that they decorated to prepare for the traveling they would be doing. 

We hope that these Time Traveling campers have been enjoying their first two days of world travels and that they are prepared for the many travels they will complete over the rest of the sessions!

The travel campers had a full day today as they journeyed out on various treks:

Our Congo Explorers bounced their way through the day at the House of Bounce and then enjoyed burning some energy at the Cub Run Rec Center.

While the Explorers bounced, the Teen Travelers splashed.   Teen Travel spent the day enjoying some time at the Bohrer Water Park.  We hope they kept cool as they swam around in the pool.

Finally, our Summer Adventurers explored the many activities that are at Central Park Funland. 

We hope our Travel Campers enjoyed their day trips today and are already looking forward to their outings that are planned for tomorrow!

The best part of Congo Camp is seeing the many abilities and talents that our campers bring to camp. 
Drama campers will be demonstrating their acting talents over the next two weeks by practicing and performing various skits and scenes. 

To start off the week, these campers had to act as their exact opposites.  This activity showed just how versatile these actors are. 

We know that these campers will be showing just how talented they are over the session and we can't wait to see some of their performances.

These campers will be solving mysteries all week and they have already started off on their forensic journey.

In Arts and Crafts Camp, these creative campers started the week by decorating slap bands.  These bands curl around the wrist when pressed (or, smacked) against it. 

The crafty campers drew their names and other designs onto the bands to show their personality and to learn about each other.

There are many events planned for the campers this week so be on the lookout for these young artists at work!

Welcome, everyone! We hope you all are getting excited for session 4.

Book Making has two major projects on which they will be working during their final day.

During the first weekend in August (Friday the 6th-Sunday the 8th), we are inviting rising 3rd to 9th graders to attend a Weekend Quest City Trip to Philadelphia, PA.

The Movie Making campers have finally finished their films. Tomorrow, these campers will be having the first releases of the feature films.

Today, the Summer Adventures campers got to prove this statement true. Their adventures took them to Volcano Island Water Park.

As the Movie Making campers continue to prepare for their directorial and acting debuts, they started preparing for the release today by editing their films.

Having had filmed most of their movies last week, they are now ensuring that their film runs smoothly and has a great soundtrack.

If you get a chance to speak with these campers about their movies, you will quickly see how excited they are to be producing a film. They have ensured their plotlines are well crafted and that their films are well done!

Directors and actors came together today as the Movie Making campers began to film their movies.
